El Colegio de España, México D.F., 2017. 451 pp. ISBN 978-607-628-193-2
Este estudio revisa el papel que el motivo literario ha tenido en la investigación en torno al roman artúrico y a la literatura caballeresca, especialmente en los ámbitos francés, inglés e hispánico. Presenta una revisión del panorama crítico alrededor de los índices de motivos (fundamentalmente los dedicados a corpus caballerescos) y se examinan las particularidades de los motivos en El baladro del sabio Merlín (Burgos, 1498, y Sevilla, 1535). Finalmente, en el Apéndice, se presenta el índice de motivos de El Balandro del sabio Merlín, cuya elaboración tiene como finalidad facilitar la localización de estas unidades narrativas para futuros análisis intertextuales proyectados sobre el mismo u otros modelos genéricos. Los índices se ofrecen en español y en inglés.
This study revises the role played by literary motifs in reseach on the Arthurian roman and chivalric literature, especially in the French, English, and Hispanic traditions. It offers a revision on the critical literature on indexes of motifs available, mainly on those dealing with chivalric corpora, and it explores the specific ones appearing in El baladro del sabio Merlín ( Burgos, 1498, and Seville, 1535). Finally, in the Appendix, an index of motifs taken from El baladro del sabio Merlín is included. Its aim is to make it easier for researchers to locate these narrative units and apply them in their future intertextual analyses focusing on this or on other generic models. Indexes are offered both in Spanish and English.
3) Debemos dar la enhorabuena a nuestra compañera Ana Mariño que acaba de presentar su tesis doctoral en la Universidad de León, con el título: Estudio comparativo y elaboración de un índice entre los motivos de los libros de caballerías hispánicos y El Señor de los Anillos de J. R. R. Tolkien.
3) We must congratulate our colleage Ana Mariño as she has just defended her doctoral thesis at the University of Leon, entitled: Comparative Study and Index between the Motifs of Hispanic Chivalric Books and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.
A través de los índices de motivos, y desde la perspectiva de la literatura comparada, la tesis pone de manifiesto las coincidencias entre los principales tópicos y motivos de los libros de caballerías castellanos y las dos obras más conocidas de J. R. R. Tolkien: The Hobbit y The Lord of the Rings. Así como los necesarios cambios de estos motivos para adaptarse al nuevo género y a los cambios de mentalidad de las distintas épocas pero manteniendo su esencia. Lo dicho, enhorabuena, Ana.
By means of indexes of motifs, and from the point of view of comparative literature, this thesis emphasizes the coindicences between the main subject matters and motifs belonging to the Castilian books of knighthood and the two most popular works by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It also deals with the changes applied to those motifs to adapt them to a new genre and to a new epoch’s mentality, but always keeping their essence. What I have just said, congratulations, Ana.

Nuestra compañera Montserrat Prat ha localizado dos curiosos lugares de la geografía española que incluyen la palabra Merli. A primera vista, parecen relacionados con el mago Merlín (Merlí, en catalán), pero no es así. Solo son dos palabras que se parecen, un ejemplo de paronimia lingüística. Ello no impide que conozcamos lugares tan curiosos.
Our colleague Montserrat Prat has located two curious places belonging to the rural Spanish geography. Both include the word merli. At first look, they seem to be related with Merlin the Enchanter (Merlí, in Catalan), but they are not at all. It is just an example of linguistic paronymy: two similar, but different, words. Anyway, it is a good excuse to get to know those places, isn`t it?
